Levi Henry Elwell was born in Northampton, Massachusetts, on March 22, 1854, the son of Levi Henry Elwell and Harriet Adaline Elwell. After receiving a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1875, he spent a year teaching in Poughkeepsie, New York, before returning to Amherst, where he became a professor of Greek at his alma mater.
